Terminology to Describe Multilingual Learners (SupportEd)

Published: Updated:

This report from from SupportEd discusses the language and labels used to represent students who speak a language other than — or in addition to — English in their home, who may or may not be in the process of acquiring English, and/or who are multilingual and multicultural.

The report examines how to accurately identify and refer to the cultural and linguistic assets that students bring to the classroom by reviewing terms used by key organizations in the education field, and assessing the language used on all U.S. state, District of Columbia, and Canadian province and territory websites related to multilingual learner education.
